With plants in desperate need of a fresh potting and my
pockets lacking depth, I decided to buy some dollar buckets, remove the handles
and drill some holes in the bottom for drainage. Planters around the same size
can be four or five dollars each but the buckets provide the same for a much
smaller price. I use half a bag of compost to a full bag of potting mix which I mix together in a big tin drum and
that seems to work well so far. So two bags of potting mix, one bag of compost,
a cordless drill and seventeen buckets later I’m a girlie on a potting mission.
The watermelon, luffa, rockmelon, currants and cucumbers were the first to dig
their roots into new soil, followed by a rhubarb, rosemary, lemon, orange and
mandarin.
